The Importance of Well-care Visits During Periods of Transformation

Adolescence is a period of transformation as young adults encounter shifts in their physical bodies. According to Healthy People 2020, “behavioral patterns during these developmental periods help determine young people’s current health status and their risk of developing chronic diseases in adulthood.”

Annual preventive exams are vital and can help providers recognize behaviors that can result in negative health outcomes. Ensuring proper development and healthy behaviors will help foster a healthy adult population.

Here are some helpful considerations:

  • Identify your patients who need their Texas Health Steps or annual preventive checkup.
  • Remind patients who are due or overdue for a preventive checkup to schedule their visit.
  • Tell patients and caregivers about the importance of preventive care, medication compliance and healthy habits when assessing their current behaviors and patterns.
  • Conduct well-care exams even when patients come to your office for other reasons, such as illnesses, sports physicals or injuries.
